Sedgwick County Public Library summer reading programs are made possible in part by the Leonard and Celia Levand Trust.
About Leonard and Celia Levand

Leonard A. Levand was born December 20, 1902, in Denver, Colorado. He was one of five children born of Jewish immigrant parents who fled Russia in a time of persecution. At a young age, Mr. Levand discovered the Denver Public Library and developed a lifelong habit of reading. He received his juris doctorate in law in 1931; the following spring he passed both the Colorado and Kansas bar examinations.

Celia Rapoport Levand, born January 22, 1901, in Bayonne, New Jersey, was a resident of Denver when she met and married Mr. Levand on July 1, 1931. They moved to Wichita that same year wher Mr. Levand began his law practice, which spanned nearly 50 years. His law practice focused primarily in the areas of commercial law, estates, and trusts.

Throughout their lifetimes, Mr. and Mrs. Levand remained active in the Wichita community. Mrs. Levand rendered a lifetime of service to charitable organizations including the Institute of Logopedics where she was recognized for outstanding service. Mr. Levand co-founded the Mid-Kansas Jewish Welfare Federation and served as its secretary for 12 years, and he was a long-time director of the Family Consultation Service. A well-read, learned, and kind man, Mr. Levand and his wife both felt that all democracy was enhanced by the knowledge and literacy of its citizens. Mr. and Mrs. Levand established the Celia and Leonard A. Levand Public Library Trust in futherance of that belief. Mr. Levand died in 1980, and Mrs. Levand died in 1988.

A plaque commerating the legacy of the Levands has been placed in a room named in their honor. The Celia and Leonard Levand Community Meeting Room is located in the Lionel Alford Regional Branch Library of the Wichita Public Library system.
